The Best Baby Friendly Cafes in Melbourne – Guest Post

Kids! What the hell do I know about kids? Nothing I tells ya. Other than the screaming. And the crying. That’s why today is a guest post and depending on the love you show her – we may well have a few more of similar posts to come.

Without any further ado, let me introduce Kristy….

The Best Baby-Friendly Cafes in Melbourne

Damn if this isn’t a controversial topic. Nothing gets some people going like taking kids to a cafe. And if you don’t know what I’m talking about then you need to get yourself up to speed on the hoo ha that went down in Sydney when a toddler decided to get a little scrappy at a cafe one recent weekend. I think the golden rule here is to be sensible. Yes there are some kid-friendly venues and that’s awesome, but if your kid is going to protest and you can’t make it stop then perhaps that day is the day for take-away coffee. It probably isn’t really the time to teach the “sometimes you have to do things in life you don’t like” lesson as, let’s face it, that’s impossible to teach to a little person who doesn’t understand consequences.

As all parents know though, a child’s behaviour is arbitrary and one day they’ll sit happily and play, and say “oh mummy can we go back there?” and the next they’ll moan like nobody’s business and tell you they hate it. So for the ‘happy to sit and play days’, here are some awesome Melbourne venues that will make any parent’s heart sing.

It was really hard to narrow down the list to just three. If you are looking for one that is closer to you I highly recommend you check out the Hey Bambini website. Just check that the cafe is still operating…I did find two that were no longer in business.

Cubby House Canteen, Armadale

This place rocks! Funky decor and hipster staff make mum and dad feel like they haven’t entirely given up their old life to start a family. The grown up stuff stops there though. This place is totally inspired by doing it right for the kidlets. Run by two sisters with training in early childhood development, there are some really fun menu items for kiddies, plus toy and activities, pram access and an accessible children’s playground. They also do a killer kids birthday party here, so do check it out. They are on facebook and regularly update their page so have a squiz. You’ll be in your car for a family day out faster than you can say ‘Boo!’.

Birdie Num Nums, Carlton North

Birdie Num Nums doesn’t compromise on quality just to give you and your kids a great place to eat. The food here is amazing and the coffee exceptional. These guys are into their coffee and they always make sure that it’s great. There is a sandpit and a stack of toys in the courtyard out the back, which is protected in case of rain. During winter they crank up the outdoor heaters so parents and kids can still use these great facilities. They get a lot of mothers groups in here, too, so if you are thinking of coming with a group then it is better to book ahead. Pram access is also great. An awesome spot.

Pampered Mummies, Yarraville

Personally I think this is an absolutely BRILLIANT idea. Why no one has thought of it before is beyond me. This is a cafe with a hair and beauty salon attached and my word, they have thought of everything. They have a bunch of kid-friendly stuff and it is all free. Three days a week they also run special activities which are great for the two+ group that might need a little more entertaining. If you want one of these activities it is a gold coin donation. They have staff available to supervise kiddies while you are getting a treatment done and nappies and wipes are available in case you forget yours. And this is just the highlight list of what is there. There is SO. MUCH. MORE. Check out their website for more info. Last but not least…you don’t have to be using the hair and beauty facilities to frequent the exceptionally child friendly cafe. Check it out mummies and daddies!

  1. We lived in Melbourne for 16 months with 2 kids under the age of 3 and I was delighted to discover how many child friendly cafes there were. I felt like I would stumble across one every time we ventured to a new suburb. One of my favourites was Six Keys in the Bayside suburb of Beaumaris … chic and child friendly!

  2. We’re regular’s at Jerry’s Milk Bar in Elwood – they’ve got a large shaded courtyard (heated in Winter) with a separate kids play area. The food is ace too and they make the finest kids shakes. Love Hey Bambini for top tips on where to head.

  3. I enjoy you because of every one of your labor on this blog. My mum loves working on investigation and it’s simple to grasp why. We notice all of the powerful method you make great tactics on your web blog and in addition foster contribution from website visitors on the subject and our favorite simple princess is without question being taught so much. Have fun with the remaining portion of the year. You are carrying out a superb job

  4. HI guys,
I recently have just discovered a great child friendly cafe named leroys in the western suburbs of Newport. This has got to be the best child friendly café I have been to. They have play equipment, sandpit and heaps of toys to keep the kids busy. This is highly recommended.

  5. With two active kids I find it hard to find a place that is kid friendly. I have recently discovered sidewalk cafe in Carnegie! You can walk in with a pram and not feel like you are in everyone’s way. They have a cute little play area for the kids so I am free to enjoy my coffee whilst they are playing. Food was deliciously fresh and staff so friendly. So if you are looking for a family friendly place definitely worth checking out sidewalk cafe.
